Privacy 101 Workshop (available to the public)

Flagship educational course of the history and importance of privacy and data ethics, with particular attention to modern data practices and their impacts on current events, society, and personhood. Beyond data privacy, learners will develop a deeper understanding of bodily/intimacy privacy, territorial privacy, communication privacy, and surveillance capitalism.Workshop-Flyer-Image.jpg

Open and free to the public. Recommended for those interested in the concept and discipline of privacy beyond compliance. Can be substituted for Privacy @ UC San Diego as a pre-requisite. Available via Zoom.

On-demand Privacy @ UC San Diego training (UC San Diego only):

This training focuses on basic data privacy principles and relevant legislation and UC policies applicable to campus activities. It provides a survey of laws such as FERPA, HIPAA, and the GDPR, along with policies related to students, academic personnel, and electronic communications, among others. 

Required for UC San Diego workforce members who access personal data or databases storing personal data. Pre-requisite for special topics trainings; Privacy 101 Workshop may be substituted for this training.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) Workshop (open to the public): ​​

The European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is a comprehensive and sweeping privacy law that applies to entities that handle the personal data of individuals in the European Economic Area (EEA). Its scope is more expansive and its requirements different than most US privacy laws, such as FERPA or HIPAA. It impacts many campus activities, including collaborative research, recruiting, and fundraising. This session is recommended for those who have completed either Privacy @ UC San Diego or the Privacy 101 workshop and handle personal data of individuals within the EEA. ​ This workshop is held semi-annually via Zoom.

Student FAQs: 

During the 2022-23 academic year, the Graduate and Professional Student Association (GPSA) and Associated Students (AS) conducted a survey of student perceptions of privacy, both at UC San Diego and more generally in society. The respondents posed questions and concerns as part of the survey. GPSA and AS, working with the Campus Privacy Office, have developed this list of FAQs to respond to student questions.
